Right now
We're having trouble communicating
What may be happening
Words may be arriving slowly, in the wrong order, or not at all — while the feeling behind them is completely intact. Most communication trouble improves when the pace slows and the sentences shorten.
What to try right now
- Come to the front, at eye level, and make sure they can see your face.
- One short sentence, then wait. Silence gives them room to find the word.
- Ask yes-or-no questions instead of open ones when speech is hard.
- Point, show, or demonstrate rather than explain.
Try saying
"Take your time. I'm listening."
"Show me."
"I think you mean the kettle — is that it?"
