Right now
I'm overwhelmed
What may be happening
This is the most under-treated part of dementia caregiving. Being overwhelmed is a signal that the load is too big for one person right now — not evidence that you're doing it badly.
What to try right now
- If everyone is safe, step out of the room for two minutes. Safe and briefly alone is allowed.
- Lower the standard for the rest of today to safe, fed, and comfortable.
- Read one caregiver note. Do nothing else while you do.
- Text one person who already understands, and don't explain from the beginning.
Try saying
To yourself: "This is hard because it is hard."
To someone else: "I need an hour this week. Can you take one?"
